Best games for android offline

One of the more significant complaints about mobile games is that many can’t be played offline. Not only is this detrimental to those who commute frequently, but it also means you can’t play your games when your internet goes out. This is why I’ve rounded up 10 of my favorite titles to play when my home network goes down, all games that you can indeed play offline in 2021.

So if you’re looking for a console-quality game to sink your teeth into that doesn’t rely on a constant internet connection, this is the roundup for you.

The best games for android offline

Dead Cells

Dead Cells is easily one of the best roguelike platformers available on the Play Store. Hands-down, the Android port is absolutely fantastic. You can select from 30FPS, 60FPS, and unlimited FPS in the game’s settings, and there’s also an HD graphics option for everyone with a beefy device.

Personally, I’ve spent a lot of time playing this roguelike on Android, and I can confidently say the game runs like butter at max settings on high-end hardware. While this is a title that demands precision controls, it’s fully playable with the touchscreen as well as a physical controller. Dead Cells is the cream of the crop when it comes to platformers, so if you’ve yet to play, make sure you do.

Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is a farming and life simulator, a niche genre with a dedicated fanbase. The point being, you can easily spend hundreds of hours in this game. Sure, things start simple enough by planting a few crops and maybe raising a chicken or two, and that’s great if you prefer to play at a casual pace.

Then again, if you’re really looking for a game with some depth, not to mention an endless campaign, then Stardew Valley is easily my top choice in today’s roundup, especially since the game supports gamepads. So not only is this a fun game to play with touch controls on a phone casually, you can really dig in on tablets and Chromebooks while out and about thanks to the included controller support and no requirement for an internet connection.don’t miss out because this is a game you can indeed play anywhere.

Civilization VI – Build A City | Strategy 4X Game

A spy media finally brought its mobile port for Civilization VI to Android in 2020. It came as a surprisebut it was definitely a welcome one. As you would expect, Civilization VI is a demanding game thanks to the gigantic and constantly growing simulation it’s pulling off. So performance can dip late-game, especially when it comes to loading times.

Keep in mind the title even chugs on the latest iPad Pro as well as the Nintendo Switch, so dropped frames are pretty much expected. Still, the Android version is an absolute joy to play despite some minor issues, and thanks to the 60-move free trial, everyone can test the game to see how it performs on their device before spending a dime.

All around, this is a solid port from A spy Media, and it’s an absolute blast to play on larger screens such as tablets. And since you don’t need an internet connection to play, it’s perfect for portable sessions.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Konami’s classic Metroidvania title Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was released on the Play Store to everyone’s surprise back in 2020, and it’s available for $2.99, which is an absolute bargain. If you’ve yet to play So N, it’s a beautiful 2D platformer that offers non-linear gameplay, meaning exploration is encouraged.

The primary campaign should take about eight or nine hours to finish, so it will take much more than one sitting to work your way through this release, and since you can play offline, you won’t have to worry about an internet connection once the game is installed.

GRID™ Autosport

Grid Autosport is a racing video game developed by Code masters for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Linux, iOS, macOS, Nintendo Switch and Android. It is the ninth game in the TOCA series. GRID Autosport is a console-quality racer that landed on Android in 2019. The full game can be had for $10, and there are no IAPs or ads, which makes this a premium release.

If you’ve yet to play this racer, it mixes many racing styles, from dirt tracks to city streets, and of course, there are numerous distinct cars to race in. In comparison, most racers on Android are free-to-play, so they contain many questionable monetization systems and a requirement for a constant internet connection. So if you’ve been searching for a premium mobile racer that won’t break the bank, can be played offline anytime you want, and offers controller support out of the box, GRID Autosport is currently the best racer available on the Play Store that fits these requirements.

Grimvalor

Grimvalor is an awesome hack-and-slash platformer that includes excellent graphics and a premium price point that can be unlocked through a single $7 in-app purchase. The game supports physical controllers, and you can even test the gameplay without going out of pocket since the first act is available for free.

Reviews have remained positive following the game’s original release on the Apple App Store in 2018, and rest assured, the Android port looks and plays just as well as it does on iOS. Controllers are supported out of the box, and there’s no internet requirement once it’s installed. Grimvalor plays well on tablets and phones alike. It’s basically a perfect portable hack and slash.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is an excellent turn-based RPG that plays similarly to the classic Square Enix JRPGs from the ’90s. You can expect excellent graphics that suit the current crop of RPGs available on consoles and PC, which is why the Android port for Battle Chasers: Nightwar is such an exceptional release. It looks excellent, touch controls are worthwhile, and there are hours of turn-based gameplay to enjoy.

So if you’re looking for a console-quality RPG experience on mobile that offers at minimum a 30-hour campaign that can be played in its entirety offline, Battle Chasers: Nightwar is easily one of the best RPGs currently available on Android. Just keep in mind that this is a demanding game, so high-end hardware is recommended. There’s also no controller support, but thankfully the touch UI works well on tablets and phones.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Anniversary Edition

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Anniversary Edition is an absolute mouthful, but luckily the game itself is fantastic, and it’s pretty gruesome to boot if you’re into that kind of thing. Sure, it’s basically a niche visual novel that contains familiar tropes, such as students stuck in a school tasked with avoiding a murderer. Thankfully the story is worth the asking price, with twists and turns all over the place. Truly, this is an engrossing game, and best of all, since it’s an anniversary edition, it offers all-new graphics and touchscreen support, not to mention a few gallery extras for the hardcore fans, along with offline play. You can also find the sequel on the Play Store, should you want to continue your adventure after finishing Trigger Happy Havoc Anniversary Thumper: Pocket Edition.

Thumper is a slick auto-running rhythm game that made its way to Android in 2019. At its core, it’s a psychedelic auto-runner that heavily relies on rhythm-based mechanics for progression. Simple taps and swipes on the screen are your controls, and you’ll have to time these interactions to the beat of the music if you want to find success. Of course, if you prefer, the game also supports physical controllers, which helps with in-game precision since a controller is much more tactile than a glass screen. There’s a total of nine levels that will take about seven and a half hours to beat, and the game can be fully played offline. So for the asking price, there’s actually a good bit of content included that should easily entertain for hours.

9th Dawn III RPG

9th Dawn III is the culmination of the last two titles in this action-RPG series, and it offers a boatload of polish, not to mention tons of loot to collect as you explore the game’s vast open world. Think “2D Skyrim,” and you’re getting close. While the second game in the series had no controller support and an odd jump mechanic, both issues are fixed in this release. So whether you want to play using the touchscreen or a physical controller, both options are available, plus you can play the entire game offline, making for a great RPG to play portably on a phone or tablet. Seriously, this is a fantastic port that should provide hundreds of hours of dungeon-exploring fun, so don’t miss out. There’s even a free demo available for those that want to see how the game plays before they plunk down their hard-earned cash.

9th Dawn III: Shadow of Ethic is a massive 2D open world RPG and collectathon dungeon crawler packed full of adventure! When asked to investigate mysterious, ghostly sightings around the lake of Elmson, you trek through the lands of Cedaltia to uncover the truth. Upon arrival, you hear rumors of an untrustworthy king. Runner: Alto’s Odyssey

Just beyond the horizon sits a majestic desert, vast and unexplored. Join Alto and his friends and set off on an endless sandboarding journey to discover its secrets.
Soar above windswept dunes, traverse thrilling canyons, and explore long-hidden temples in a fantastical place far from home.

Along the way, you’ll grind across vines, bounce atop hot air balloons, ride towering rock walls, and escape mischievous lemurs – all while uncovering the desert’s many mysteries.
At first glance, this seems like just another endless runner. But play Alto’s Odyssey for a while, and you’ll realize there’s something about it that makes it impossible to put down.
Perhaps it’s the graphics and the music. Endless runners are usually frantic, but this game bucks the trend to make it a soothing, calming experience. You’ll find yourself relaxing as you slide down sand dunes, jump to collect points, avoid obstacles, and perform backflips and double backflips for style bonuses.

Alto’s Odyssey doesn’t bring anything new to the world of runners, but is highly entertaining nonetheless.

Chess: Really Bad Chess

Really Bad Chess is a mobile video game developed by Zach Gage. It was released on October 13, 2016 for iOS, with a version for Android released in May 2017. The game is based on the original game of chess but contains rearranged boards.
Forget about the classic version of chess you’re used to. When you’re offline, fire up Really Bad Chess and challenge yourself to think differently.

In this game, while the chess board remains standard, the pieces are completely random. You might start with three queens and a single pawn, while the computer could have a series of six rooks. It makes you discard everything you know about chess, and think out of the box. As you raise your ranking, the AI’s level stays the same, but it gets better pieces to start. This might be my favorite non-chess chess game ever.

Puzzle: Mazes & More

Solving a maze is tricky because of its simplicity. Mazes & More raises the stakes on the classic game with some devious twists.
For example, in the Darkness mode, you can see the maze at the start. But then everything goes dark except a small spotlight on you, and you have to make your way to the exit. Try other modes like ice floor, where you end up sliding ahead of where you wanted to go, or the self-explanatory time trial mode and traps mode.
In case you want a simple old game of maze-solving, there’s always Classic mode. Each mode has plenty of levels to keep you entertained till your connect comes back again.

Platform: Once Upon A Tower

Once Upon A Tower flips a lot of game elements upside down. Instead of a prince rescuing a princess from a tower, the prince is dead and the princess is kicking some butt with a sledgehammer to escape the dragon. And instead of climbing up a tower, she’s digging down.
On her way, she’ll have to battle monsters of all kinds, from ogres to spiders that can climb up walls. Then there are the traps that spring out of nowhere. If that wasn’t enough, she needs to be quick or the dragon will lay waste to everything with its fiery breath. Don’t forget about the other enemy: gravity itself.
Collect coins and power-ups when you can; you’ll need them to pass the levels to escape the tower. Once Upon A Tower is oodles of fun, and seemingly endless.

Arcade: Jungle Marble Blast

Jungle Marble Blast is a marble shoot game with the theme of Egyptian mythology. It is easy to play, but truly addictive. Your goal is to clear all the marbles before they reach the end of the path, and meanwhile, achieve Marbles and Combos as many as possible to get the highest score. Unfortunately, the classic Zuma doesn’t work without an internet connection, but some of its many knock-offs do. Among them, I liked Jungle Marble Blast the best.

The graphics aren’t as smooth, but this isn’t a significant complaint. The gameplay is just as fun as it ever was. Tap anywhere on the screen to shoot; tap on the beetle to swap between the two colored spheres you have. Shoot the spheres at the chain going around the map to create sequences of three or more. And when possible, get those power-ups to send the chain back, turn a large chunk into one color, or blast them into oblivion. Jungle Marble Blast fits into the group of best offline games for Android perfectly. It’s small, lengthy, and free.

Brainy: Quizoid

Those great brainy multiplayer games won’t work offline. Quizoid is all about challenging yourself, not someone else. Like other such apps, Quizoid asks a question with multiple answers, and you have to pick the right one. But since it’s you against the AI, there are a few more game modes. For example, you can play 20 questions with the computer, or you can play a timed round to answer as many as you can.

Quizoid boasts of over 7,000 trivia questions across 17 categories like entertainment, sports, science, politics, history, and more. Unfortunately, category-based quizzes are only available in the paid pro pack.

Action: Tank Hero: Laser Wars

Tank Hero: Laser Wars doesn’t show up in usual “offline game” collections, but it’s so good that I’m wondering why it isn’t so popular. You play the titular Tank Hero, taking out all the other tanks with your laser-powered cannon. In each level, you have to destroy all the other tanks in the map. The top-down shooter makes you control your tank with a virtual joystick, while you can tap anywhere on the screen to shoot.

Of course, it’s not that simple. As you progress, you’ll find different types of tanks, power-ups, and fiendish mazes that make your task challenging. But remember, lasers bounce against walls, so use that to your advantage.

Features

  • All new 3D graphics engine with hyper realistic lighting and special effects
  • Three unique worlds to conquer
  • Interactive environments that include force fields, exploding barrels, and more
  • Super charge your tank on the battlefield with powerups such as energy shields and speed boost
  • Epic boss battles that will put your skills to the ultimate test
  • Split screen deathmatch mode
  • All new achievements system
  • 4 difficulty levels to accomodate all types of players
  • Original soundtrack

Puzzle: Sudoku (by Fassor)

The Play Store is filled to the brim with Sudoku games, and many of them work offline too. Fassor’s Sudoku isn’t objectively superior; it’s just the one I like the most and works perfectly. This Sudoku does the basics right, which is all you want at times. There are four skill levels, and a timer to test how quickly you can finish each type.

One of Fassor’s highlights is that you can write multiple rough numbers in a cell—but be warned, this incurs a 30 second penalty. You can check whether you’ve solved everything correctly so far anytime, but again, there’s a penalty for that. Those time penalties add up, ruining your overall score. And when you reconnect to the internet, that’s what your friends will see.

Shooter: Smash Hit

Smash Hit was one of the most addictive games of 2014, and it still holds up as a guaranteed good time. It’s a little strange to call it a shooter, but that’s essentially what it is.It plays from a first-person perspective and requires you to throw steel balls at glass objects to smash them into pieces. Building up a chain of successful hits and taking out all glasses gives you bonuses, like increasing the number of steel balls you launch simultaneously.

The whole time, you’re slowly moving ahead through levels, and the pace picks up as you progress. Make sure you don’t get hit by any glass object and you’ll beat the game in no time. But it’s not as easy as it seems.
